5 Ways to Use Onion Juice for Thinning Hair and Hair Growth

1.0K shares

I’ve noticed more each day how thin my hair was getting. Whether it was identifying that my part showed more scalp than before or my hair at the temples was getting thin, that reminded daily that my thick locks of yesteryears were suddenly disappearing.

Onion juice for thinning hair - This natural remedy might not smell appealing, but it has been a successful treatment for hair loss. It helps increase hair growth and reverse grey hair when applied to the scalp.

I simply wasn’t ready to have thinning hair. That should be reserved for…..well, for no time in my life. I just can’t identify any time when I’d be comfortable with the concept.

I tried thickening shampoos and conditioners, but they didn’t give me more hair but helped disguise the look of thinning hair. It also made my hair a bit flyaway and uncontrollable, since it plumps the shafts.

Looking for a Cure, Not a Cover-up

I scanned the internet for days and found so many different reasons for thinning hair and ten times the number of solutions. One that kept popping up in most of the articles I read was the onion.

While I love onions on my salads and use them in cooking in almost every meal, the thought of applying the juice on my head was more than just repugnant; it was scary. Of course, since I eat onions with a large amount of regularity, I knew I wasn’t allergic to it.

So that was one worry out of the way. I still did a skin test to see if there was any reaction, just in case. No matter what you try for thinning hair, you too should first test a small patch of skin, rather than face a disaster of blisters from hives on your head.

Why Is Onion Effective In Facilitating Hair Growth?

#1

Preventing Hair Loss

Onions have been used for hundreds of years for both hair growth and graying. There are some nutrients and phytochemicals in onions that help provide the boost for the scalp and hair roots. The catalase in onions helps fight off graying, but for hair growth, the onion supplies sulfur.

Hair is made of keratin, but it requires sulfur for strong bonds to prevent breakage and stimulate hair growth. The onion provides the much-needed sulfur. When you use it on your scalp, it also stimulates blood circulation, bringing more nutrients to the hair follicles.

#2

Excellent Tonic for Hair Thinning

The sulfur in onions is known as methylsulfonylmethane — MSM. It does not only help create stronger bonds, so the keratin for the hair shaft is healthy.

It also is considered a great supplement to the diet for improving skin, reducing inflammation and pain, improving energy levels and detoxifying the body.

#3

Improve Hair Thickness

It can also improve nail and hair health if taken internally, and you can get that benefit inexpensively by adding more onions to your diet and rinsing your hair in onion juice. Eating onions also help improve hair thickness and prevents hair loss.

One study showed that alopecia areata patients, people who suffered from a complete loss of hair on their head and body, actually had hair start to grow after applying onion juice.

#4

Treating Several Scalp and Hair Infections

Onions not only provide the nutrients to prevent hair from breaking and helps promote hair growth, but the juice is also antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial.

That means using the juice as a rinse frequently can contribute to killing or prevent fungal and bacterial infections that can affect hair growth or cause dandruff.

How to Make the Rinse:

  • Just blend or grate an onion and strain it to separate out the juice until you have ¼ cup of the onion juice.
  • You can either add 1 tbsp of honey or ¼ cup of lemon juice.
  • When you use the lemon juice, it helps slow, prevent or reverse graying, thanks to the high vitamin C.
  • It also takes the strong skunky smell out of the onion juice. Leave on your scalp for 15 to 30 minutes and wash as usual.
